Donald Morrison takes an unflinching look at the startling and largely unknown story of the Gaels in Australia. The Gaels knew Australia as the 'land of gold', but in many ways its settlement was one of the darkest episodes of Highland emigration.
Large-scale migration from Scotland to Australia was born out of the trauma of famine and clearance, and the emigrant ships from this period are notorious for their squalor, disease and mass deaths. However, the tragedy was not just that of Gaels alone. Their history in Australia also encompasses some of the most infamous genocides of Aboriginal people.
