In the Firing Line
Paul Mason charts the moving story of two Midlands-based manufacturing companies struggling to survive the recession, gaining access to the factories in question.
In the second of this Money Programme series looking at different sectors of Britain's economy in the recession, Newsnight's Paul Mason covers the moving story of rising unemployment from the shop floor of two struggling manufacturing companies in the Midlands.
With remarkable access to two factories struggling to survive, the film looks at the continuing battle they face, and charts the job-saving measures being introduced, from cutting costs and reducing working hours through to seeking support from the banks to avoid closure and the spectre of laying people off. The situation is heartbreaking for the owners and unsettling for the staff. One company owner has dedicated his life to creating jobs that may now disappear.
