Russell Davies celebrates the art, craft & inspiration of the popular song, remembering Dudley Moore and marking the 80th birthday of Chris Barber.

Russell opens by demonstrating how ancient songs can also be also modern songs, with a 1937 recording used in a current ad campaign. It's Fats Waller's Spring Cleaning, followed by Doris Day and A Woman's Touch.

A fond memory of Dudley Moore, who would have been 75 today, through his "Strictly For The Birds" with Cleo Laine. This leads on to an exploration of hometown as perceived in song. A salute is also raised to Chris Barber, 80 yesterday.
