The ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ Symphony Orchestra begins a week of live and recently recorded music from ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ performing groups on Afternoon on Three, with a concert given last Saturday at the Barbican under conductor Jirà Belohlávek. After Wagner's stirring Tannhäuser Overture, soprano Christine Brewer performs songs by Joseph Marx, and the concert finishes with Richard Strauss's epic Alpine Symphony.
This week Afternoon on Three also joins in Radio 3's Checkmate theme with readings about chess and related music.
