Russell spotlights the greatest exponents of popular song. He celebrates inductees to the Grammy Hall of Fame, Sinatra's Reprise label and Valentine's Day.
The announcement of this year's inductees to the Grammy Hall of Fame takes up much of Russell Davies' attention this week. We hear Duke Ellington's Do Nothing 'Til You Hear from Me; Mildred Bailey's Rockin' Chair; The Heather on the Hill from the original Broadway cast album of Brigadoon; Maria Muldaur's Midnight at the Oasis, all of which have made the grade - and one that Russell suggests should have been inducted before: Big Joe Turner and Pete Johnson's Roll 'Em Pete.
For much of the rest of the show, the 50th anniversary of the founding of Sinatra's Reprise label provides plenty of music, from Bing Crosby and members of the Rat Pack, Rosemary Clooney - and Pepino, the Italian Mouse!
A nod to upcoming Valentine's Day also comes in the shape of Nat Cole's I Love You for Sentimental Reasons and a song from Dickie Valentine - All the Time and Everywhere.
