Jimmy tries to hide his unemployed status. Deek feels the pressure when the workmen return to test the portacabin site. Gina tries to cope with Ruth's absence.
Unable to tell Scarlett that he's been made redundant, Jimmy has been pretending to go to work every day. When a suspicious Molly confronts Jimmy about not being at work he spins a lie that the Council have promoted him to be supervisor on the clean up site. Elated at Jimmy's 'promotion', Molly rushes off to spread the good news. The actual truth is that Jimmy has a job interview today and needs somewhere to get changed so the family don't find out. Awaiting his interview, Jimmy takes a call from an irate Scarlett - there's no money in their bank account and they've a bill to pay. Embarrassed and agitated, Jimmy tries to whisper his assurances that it must be a mistake. Scarlett's not pleased. The interview doesn't go exactly to plan with honest Jimmy confessing to being a hard man with a criminal record and needing lots of time off to care for his sick wife. But Jimmy pulls it back towards the end - he's a good man and a grafter and he'll give his all to the job. Happy that he turned things round, Jimmy leaves and walks slap bang into the next candidate - Big Bob! Rather than come clean to Bob, Jimmy is forced to keep up the 'promotion' lie. Anything to protect Scarlett from the truth.
The day gets worse when Jimmy overhears Big Bob being offered the job. Jimmy is crestfallen, sick to the stomach. He graciously congratulates Bob but, to Jimmy's horror, blabbermouth Molly announces the family now have two new jobs to celebrate and before he knows it, a delighted Scarlett calls for a celebration party in the Tall Ship. Increasingly desperate for money, Jimmy's asking around for work - to no avail. He's a broken man. He then finds Murray's lost wallet containing 80 pounds in cash. Facing a moral dilemma, Jimmy thinks of Scarlett and their bills, and pockets the money.
As celebrations get underway in the Ship, Jimmy can't bear to see Scarlett flashing the cash. When a concerned Big Bob confronts Jimmy about his so called promotion, Jimmy panics and makes a sharp exit. Jimmy's devastated and furious with himself. Scarlett senses something's wrong and wheedles it out of him. The redundancy news shocks her but she comforts Jimmy and emphasises family values and sticking together. Positive thinker Scarlett then rallies the family to have a clear out and sell some stuff online to raise cash. Molly has a better idea to get Jimmy into some dodgy 'back shop' dealings which is blown out of the water by Scarlett. They'll find some way to pay the bill - oh yeah, guilt-ridden Jimmy still has the 80 pounds from Murray's wallet!
Inspection of the industrial waste is talk of the steamie in Shieldinch, and it's causing friction between the guilty protagonists, Fraser and Deek. In an awkward exchange, Deek explains he's keen to establish more of a role in Heavenly Herbals. Fraser fobs him off stating all the investment money has been spent on the clean up. Meanwhile, Amber suggests that she and Fraser could buy Ruth's old flat. Fraser's delighted at the prospect but explains he has no money for a deposit. No problem - Amber says she'll pay the whole deposit herself. This is music to Fraser's ears and he can't help bragging to Gabriel. But Fraser's smug attitude bites him when Deek gets wind of his plans. Furious that Fraser claims he has no money for the business but seems to have plenty to buy a flat, Deek finally cracks and tells the truth about who dumped the waste. As news of Fraser's deceit travels round Shieldinch, people question Amber's judgement in Fraser as a boyfriend. Malcolm and Liz are particularly upset and Liz issues Fraser with an ultimatum - either he tells Amber the truth or she will. Unable to actually admit he's been in the wrong, Fraser just walks away.
Gina's feeling guilty about Ruth leaving and questions her ability as a mother. Murray tries to help with magazine articles on the subject, but it's a cosy chat with old flame Jack that really helps Gina move forward. She's been questioning her bond with Murray but Jack's sensitive words make her see where her heart lies - with Murray. It's night in the Oyster and Murray comes to meet Gina. In a warm exchange, she thanks him for caring and they head off to continue clearing out Ruth's flat. Not so pleased is Jack who tries to be happy for Gina but is starting to realise he still has feelings for her.
