Russell Davies celebrates the art, craft and inspiration of the popular song. His featured artists include Jelly Roll Morton.
More little-celebrated songwriters populate this week's show: Elmer Albrecht, the Chicago mortician whose casual piano doodle became Elmer's Tune, a huge hit for Glenn Miller and others; and two songs by the often misspelt John M Elliot.
Conductor/arranger/composer Cyril Ornadel died recently and he is recalled by three of his compositions: If I Ruled the World, A Portrait of My Love and the less typical Cheese, which Ornadel co-wrote with Hal Shafer for Spike Milligan (as Ben Gunn) in the show Treasure Island.
Russell then salutes pianist, composer, arranger, would-be comedian, pool-shark, pimp and self-announced "creator of jazz", Jelly Roll Morton who died 70 years ago to the day the show is broadcast. We hear him sing four of his compositions; Swingle ll sing a transcription of his Chicago Breakdown; and Leon Redbone performs Sweet Substitute.
A final query about Jack Elliot brings us Peggy Lee's famous recording of Heart, closely followed by Allan Sherman's parody of the same: Skin - and the show is concluded by more cheese: Say Cheese by Jackie and Roy.
