Russell celebrates the popular song, opening with Janet Seidel's It's De-Lovely. Other featured artists this week include Daryl Sherman, Esperanza Spalding and Nat King Cole.
Russell opens with news that Australian singer Janet Seidel will be in Britain for seven months and plays her version of It's De-Lovely.
A call from US singer Daryl Sherman brings discussions of a revival of the 1930 Kay Swift show Fine And Dandy and we hear Let's Go Eat Worms In The Garden. More Swift from the same period, Up Among The Chimney Pots, brings us to "rooftop songs" with Hope & Ross's Penthouse Serenade, an eccentric Chim Chim Cheree from singer-bassist Esperanza Spalding and an Irving Berlin rarity, On A Roof In Manhattan.
The Berlin song, from a 1932 show Face The Music, prompts exploration of that phrase with Let's Face The Music and Dance (Nat King Cole) and I Can't Face The Music (Billie Holiday). The latter, a Rube Bloom tune, leads to a vintage example of Bloom singing his The Man From The South.
Back to rooftops with James Taylor's version of Up On The Roof. Then a valete to Kay Armen - who died recently age 95 - with her Where Do I Go From You and recognition of Johnnie Ray's Cry (60 years old today) and Daryl Sherman's Top Of The Town.
