Today's main concert of Butterworth, Vaughan Williams and Schubert was given in Glasgow less than an fortnight ago by the 蜜芽传媒 Scottish Symphony Orchestra and their Associate Guest Conductor Andrew Manze. George Butterworth, who was killed on the Western Front in 1916, is the direct connection with this week's other theme of the First World War - also reflected today by three works Elgar wrote to support the war effort, and by another concertante work by Vaughan Williams, possibly the best-loved piece he ever wrote: 'The Lark Ascending'. Sketched as the war was starting, but not finished till after 1918, in a very different world, the music has been seen as a lament for England's supposed lost innocence.
