The ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ Philharmonic's programme tonight reflects their 'Mancunian Way' of doing things! They begin with Manchester-trained Barry Gray's iconic music for 'Thunderbirds', and end with Walton's angry young man's symphony. Written in those uneasy inter-war years, his First Symphony is a controlled explosion of passion and shattering energy. There's a French treat between these two works as Japanese virtuoso Sayaka Shoji plays two contrasting showpieces for the violin. And wizardry completes this evening's menu, with Dukas's 'The Sorcerer's Apprentice', famous from Disney's 'Fantasia' and conjured up tonight in full orchestral Technicolor.
