Pause for Thought

                With Rabbi Pete Tobias.
Ìý
Well Chris, that’s a latke you’re eating there – a homemade potato pancake, which. along with the doughnuts you had yesterday, is traditional food for the festival of Chanukkah, whichÌýstarted last night.ÌýAs the Orthodox Chief Rabbi, Ephraim Mirvis, explained yesterday, it’s a festival about identity, our own, and how we connect with that of others. Chanukkah often coincides with Christmas; this year, for complicated reasons to do with the lunar calendar that I won’t bore you with, it coincides with Thanksgiving in the USA.
Ìý
This is definitely a time of year for celebration. It’s getting darker here in the northern hemisphere and there are various festivals, many associated with light. Chanukkah is the Jewish festival of lights, and for the next seven nights we’ll be lighting candles. Out in the streets of our towns and cities there are lights to brighten the gloomy evenings.
Ìý
For some, however, the lights of celebration have little effect. Their thoughts are more focused on the gloom that lies behind them and waits beyond them once they are extinguished in a few weeks’ time. There are many who dread this time of year. People with no families with whom to share the celebrations, lonely individuals who feel the cold and lack the warmth of human contact. For such people, this time of year can be a depressing prospect.
Ìý
Depression and associated mental health issues are in the news at the moment as England cricketer Jonathan Trott returns from the bright glare of an Australian summer to the darkness of winter. The difficulties he is facing have brought such questions into focus, reminding us that there are many who fear December’s arrival.
Ìý
As we light our Chanukkah candles, see the pretty lights in our streets or get ready to decorate our trees, I'm going to spare a thought for those for whom this is a time not of celebration, but of trepidation. As December approaches,ÌýI'mÌýgoing to ask myself if there's something IÌýcan do to bring a little of the brightness of our festivals into the lives of those who, for whatever reason, find it difficult to see the light in the darkness that surrounds them.
