Episode 4
Penny Gore presents the ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ National Orchestra of Wales in recent performances of music by Hosokawa, Mozart, Schulhoff, Takemitsu, Chausson, Ibert and Debussy.
Penny Gore presents the ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ NOW in recent performances including a favourite concerto by Mozart and a rarely heard concerto by Erwin Schulhoff written of 1930. There's a maritime flavour in the two works by Ibert and Debussy and, in this week's concluding programme, there's a chance to catch up with Toshio Hosokawa's Woven Dreams, the winner of the international category of the 2013 British Composer Awards. Hosokawa writes about the piece: "I once had a dream that I was in my mother's womb. In the dream, I experienced these things: the joy of being in the warm womb, pressure and obsession that I must be born before long, and the joy of coming into the world through the suffering and pain of the process of birth. These are deep experiences that will stay in my mind for all time and which I have tried to recreate in music.
In this work there are many influences from the musical language of Gagaku, the ancient Japanese court music that is the womb of my music."
