Sophia Loren, Italy's most renowned and honoured actress, talks about her life and career spanning seven decades.
In 1971 Erin Pizzey was one of the women who set up the first refuge for women escaping domestic violence. She is joined by Jenny Smith who escaped a violent marriage with her two children in 1973. They talk about what life was like at the refuge some 40 years ago.

Sophia Loren is an Academy Award-winning film star and Italy's most renowned and honoured actress. After a career spanning seven decades, and at the age of 80, she is now publishing her memoirs. Yesterday, Today, Tomorrow : My Life describes her difficult and impoverished childhood in war-torn Naples through her rise to global fame and screen legend. Sophia joins Jenni to recount stories of her difficult father, her 56 year marriage to producer Carlo Ponti and her brief incarceration in an Italian prison.

Her latest book tells the story of Angela who for more than thirty years has sent friends and family around the world a cheery and chatty Christmas letter about her family in rural Australia titled Hello from the Gillespies. is a popular science author who is only one of four women to have been shortlisted, for her book GULP, for the Winton Prize for Science Books, in the last 10 years. She describes herself as a ‘science-goober’ who is not usually ‘prize-winning stock’ even though she has written four bestsellers. And she’s also achieved all this without any science degree behind her.
Cara Dillion
Folk singer, , grew up in a musical family in Dungiven, Northern Ireland. Immersed in the rich musical traditions of folkshe began singing from an early age, winning the All Ireland Traditional Singing competition by the time she was 14 years old. She has risen to become one of the finest interpreters of traditional Irish song anywhere in the world. Q Magazinedescribed her as “Quite possibly the world’s most beautiful female voice…”. Together with her husband and musical partner, Sam Lakeman she’s known for mixing both the traditional and contemporary in her song writing. Her solo albums have won many awards including Radio 2’s folk album of the year. Cara is currently touring the UK and joins us to sing live from her latest album “A Thousand Hearts”.
