Pause For Thought

From Rev Ruth Scott, Anglican Vicar in Richmond:
My nephew, Stephen, tells me that before a glass of champagne goes flat 2,000,000 bubbles in it will pop. I’m incredulous that anyone would leave a flute of fizz undrunk or feel the need to work out this statistic, but I can’t really cast aspersions over the peculiarity of others when I’ve more than enough of my own eccentricities! On this New Year’s Day I suspect 2,000,000, will be but a fraction of the number of resolutions made across the nation that, like champagne bubbles, will disappear without trace within a short space of time. It seems we make them knowing we’ll break them. A pointless game…and yet, as the New Year rings in across a world marred by acts of profound inhumanity, by escalating conflict, treatable but untreated disease and poverty ignored by those with the power to eradicate it, there is no better time to commit ourselves, at the very least, to trying to be the half decent human beings needed to address the issues which ultimately threaten the peace of us all. Last year, working with men and women here and abroad I was struck so often by how grateful people were simply to be heard, because the norm for them was for their stories to fall on deaf and indifferent ears. The inability to listen profoundly is not a new phenomenon. In my own tradition of Christianity the gospel words, ‘Let those who have ears to hear, hear!’ echo down the centuries, and Church history shows how frequently we failed to do that. As the old year is laid to rest and 2015 begins, I want to commit myself to living out some wisdom from a rather unexpected source. It was the disgraced American President, Richard Nixon, who said, “We cannot learn from each other until we stop shouting at one another – until we speak quietly enough so that our words can be heard as well as our voices.’ This is surely something that all of us, no matter how imperfect, can practice as we welcome each new day. Happy New Year, and good luck counting the champagne bubbles!
