ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ NOW - Janacek, Mozart, Shostakovich
Live from Cardiff, ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ NOW under Lesley Hatfield. Janacek arr Tognetti: String Quartet No 1. Mozart: Piano Concerto No 9. Shostakovich arr Barshai: Symphony for Strings and Wind.
A concert of supersized string quartets, with the ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ National Orchestra of Wales directed by leader Lesley Hatfield. Janacek's Quartet No.1, arranged by Richard Tognetti, is inspired by Tolstoy's 1889 novella 'The Kreutzer Sonata'. It is a depiction of suspicion, jealousy and psychological turmoil and recalls Beethoven's earlier work for violin and piano. Shostakovich's Symphony for strings and winds is arranged from the composer's 3rd String Quartet, written during his neo-classical period and later reworked by his pupil Rudolf Barshai. In between, the orchestra welcomes back ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ Radio 3 New Generation Artist Louis Schwizgebel to perform Mozart's Piano Concerto No.9.
