How do you inspire someone to work harder? This was the theme of a school open evening I attended recently.

The answer it would seem was to tell the children that they would earn more money if they ditched their games console and social media habit for their textbooks. Graphs were put up informing the children and parents of the financial benefits of GCSES, A Levels and ultimately degrees. And even degrees have their hierarchy. Apparently degrees from certain select universities are worth 拢7,600 more per annum in your starting salary. There was much talk of how to build the CVs of young people so that they could face a "harsh and competitive world". In addition, a humiliating YouTube video was shown of a child opening her A Level results on national TV and not getting the grades she needed to go to her first choice university.

I could not have gotten out of the place fast enough - and neither could my daughter. Rarely have I felt so demotivated. Work harder?! I needed to lie down, sleep and recover!

Do we really want to give the next generation the message that money and fear are what matter? Whilst they have their place in life's jumble of experiences, they rarely encourage true and lasting motivation. People are what matter. Study after study shows that if you inspire people to care for those around them, and have a meaningful purpose in life, then they will diligently dedicate themselves to the endeavours ahead of them.

The Prophet encouraged learning. He called the road of learning a road to paradise, the scholar greater than the soldier, and the knowledgeable superior to the devout. Yet it was never about money. It was about building better people. For me, education should light a fire within us to improve us, and help our world. If our young people are told it is just about grades or more money what are we building for our future? I see the hard work and dedication of teachers, but I also want to help the culture around education to be one that supports the spiritual, emotional and mental well-being in our children, rather than terrify them that the so-called wrong grades will lead to humiliation and lifelong failure.
