Penny Gore presents a concert given by the ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ Scottish Symphony Orchestra under conductor Martyn Brabbins, including Tchaikovsky's The Tempest and his Symphony No. 6; in between them, we hear Elgar's Sea Pictures with the mezzo-soprano Karen Cargill as soloist. This concert is followed by Shostakovich's Symphony No. 7, the 'Leningrad', performed by the ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Semyon Bychkov, all part of Afternoon Concert's participation in Radio 3's season Breaking Free: A Century of Russian Culture, which continues next week.
