Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought
From Sarah Joseph, Editor of a Muslim lifestyle magazine:
One of my happy places is my garden. I try and garden organically… and am trying to attract pollinators– especially bees. Us humans desperately need bees. They are essential for the food chain, and a world without them could see a loss of our food supplies, but we are losing bees at an alarming rate. So we’ve been growing plants in our garden that bees love. Now, I often chat to my neighbours over the garden fence. And both sets of my neighbours have been working in their gardens. One neighbour had a problem with his plants and I had given him some organic solutions. However the other day I was horrified when he showed me that he had sprayed his garden with a pesticide that has been linked to the dramatic collapse in bee numbers. I don’t blame my neighbour. It doesn’t say on the bottle – “hey - this could wipe out the bee population”.
The whole incident just made me realise, that me doing my bit – alone in my garden, isn’t enough. There is a traditional story of a farmer who grew award winning corn. And every year, he would share his seeds with neighbouring farms. People would question him, “Why do you give your prize-winning corn seed away? Aren’t you afraid your neighbours will overtake you?” The farmer would smile, and patiently explain, “Growing corn is about many things.
My corn is pollinated from the plants around it. If my neighbour’s corn is weak, my own corn will become weak. So, I have to help my neighbours grow the best corn, so that I can grow the best corn.” The Qur’an demands that we care for our “neighbours who are near, neighbours who are strangers, and the companion by your side”, and reminds constantly of humanity’s common origins and interconnectedness. For me, life is a connected enterprise. What I do affects you. What you do affects me. Whether it’s the farmer sharing his best corn, or my neighbour spraying his plants with a bee-killing pesticide—we are all connected. Our welfare is interlinked. So, I’ll keep chatting to my neighbour and try and explain why we have to work together so both our gardens thrive. Which is rather like life in general, I think.
