Pause For Thought

From Dave Tomlinson, writer and vicar at large:
One of the things I (kind of) learned along the way is that life is messy – the best laid plans and all that – things often work out differently to how we expect or maybe want them to.
This time last year we were about to move house. We’d already shifted a lot of the furniture and eagerly anticipated the big day when we discovered a water heater had sprung a leak upstairs and drenched the house. Newly decorated rooms were flooded, Ceilings had collapsed. Plasterwork was hanging from the walls.
Obviously, the move was off. It took three months for the house to dry, during which time we were ‘camped out’ in our old house with a few bits of furniture, feeling sorry for ourselves.
Life for most of us seems to incorporate all kinds of chaotic inconveniences, many of which are completely beyond our control. Yet to some extent, I believe happiness in life depends on being able to embrace these inconveniences.
For some people, of course, the scale of messiness life brings is completely different. Six years ago, this week, Victoria, a beautiful woman with multiple profound disabilities passed away after prolonged illness, aged 43, and I had the honour of conducting her farewell service.
When she was born, Victoria’s parents were plunged into a world of messiness which changed the course of their life entirely. But it was a messiness Jean and Norman learned to embrace, and which through the gift of Victoria also filled their world with a warmth and love that enabled them to make the lives of other people in a similar situation very much better.
The Stoics in ancient Greece had a philosophy which said that contentment lies in being reconciled with whatever life brings. They called it ‘the art of acquiescence’, which isn’t the same as giving up, but means to stop fighting the things we cannot change.
Perhaps the greatest obstacle to joy and contentment in this world is the myth of an ideal life – the burdensome notion that we can somehow escape the messiness involved in being human.
Life is haphazard, untidy, unpredictable, messy. I love it (mostly!)
