Coleridge-Taylor wrote his Violin Concerto in 1912 for an American soloist, sending the completed score of the on the Titanic. The material never arrived, of course, and he had to hastily rewrite the piece from memory.
Brahms finished his Second Symphony some 35 years earlier, claiming that it was 鈥榮o melancholy that you will not be able to bear it. I have never written anything so sad, and the score must come out in mourning鈥�. Nothing could be further from the truth 鈥� this symphony is one of the composer鈥檚 sunniest and most cheerful works.
Kevin John Edusei makes a welcome return to conduct Chineke! and the violin soloist is Elena Urioste, one of Radio 3鈥檚 New Generation artists.
