Matt, Charlotte and Steve are on the Auchlyne Estate in Perthshire. It’s the first of four visits they’ll make this year, charting life on the estate through the seasons.

Matt, Charlotte and Steve are on the Auchlyne Estate near Killin in Perthshire. It’s the first of four visits they’ll be making over the next year, charting life on the estate throughout the seasons.

Matt meets Emma Paterson, the laird of the estate, to learn about its history and the plans for its future. He also gets a lesson in preparing their prized highland cattle for a show. Charlotte hooks up with Emma’s daughter Nicola for a spot of deerstalking and chats to gamekeeper Ian Dingwall about turning a profit from the venison. Steve is down by the river trying his hand at fly fishing for salmon, and there is a closer look at the life of Auchlyne’s resident handyman Dave Christie.

Away from the estate Adam discovers that for one rare breed of sheep it’s already shearing time, and Tom goes back to the classroom to see if the next generation of farmers are being given the training they need.

We learn the estate’s history and how six generations have lived here since 1888.  

Matt also helps out with the grooming of their pedigree breed of Highland cattle.

Adam's on his way to see one milk round that’s not only improving the fortunes of farmers but also changing the face of breakfast altogether.

Paul Balmer’s family dairy has been supplying milk to East Lancashire’s milkmen, cafes and shops for more than forty years.

After years of hardship and hard graft, demand is growing again - thanks to the return of the traditional glass bottle which appeals to milk-lovers who want to go plastic-free.

Deer-stalking is a traditional pursuit that brings in much-needed income to the Auchlyne estate. 
Charlotte sees how it's a way of life that doesn’t just bring in cash but also helps to control deer numbers.  
Estates like Auchlyne have to cull a set number of deer each year under guidelines laid down by Scottish Natural Heritage.
But shooting for sport is controversial and doesn’t sit comfortably with many.
So Charlotte's spending some time with Nicola - Emma’s daughter and heir to the estate -  and gamekeeper Ian Dingwall to weigh up the pros and cons.
