A selection of strange sounds discovered via a connection with the women that raised us and music from Jóhann Jóhannsson’s contemporary classical record The Miners’ Hymns.
To celebrate Mother’s Day, we asked some of our favourite freaky artists and children of The Zone, including experimental singer Keeley Forsyth and spoken word artist Tenesha The Wordsmith, to play tracks they discovered through their Mums. This week’s featured album is Icelandic composer Jóhann Jóhannsson’s 2011 experimental contemporary classical record, The Miners’ Hymns. It’s an illuminating musical elegy to the now extinct industry and mining communities of North East England.
Additional obscure offerings come in the form of radiophonic pop, Liverpudlian devotional music and Ukranian pyschadelic folk recorded in an abandoned park in Kiev.
