Salford Symphony

Conductor Mark Wigglesworth and the ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ Philharmonic in Beethoven's First Symphony and Haydn's last. Pianist Stephen Hough joins them for Beethoven's majestic 'Emperor' Concerto.

Live from MediaCityUK, Salford
Presented by Tom McKinney

Mark Wigglesworth and the ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ Philharmonic begin their concert with Beethoven's sparkling First Symphony. Stephen Hough joins the ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ Philharmonic in Beethoven's majestic ‘Emperor’ Concerto. Haydn's final symphony closes the programme. Written only six years before Beethoven's First, at a time when Haydn was enjoying cult status in London, its confident exuberance is all-pervading right through to the catchy tune in the finale. Is it really a street-seller's song exhorting us to buy his fresh fish?
