Gretchen Parlato Interview
Jamie’s joined by the jazz singer and composer Gretchen Parlato to talk about her new album Flor, early musical roots and her love for Brazilian music
Jamie’s guest on the show this week is the revered composer and singer Gretchen Parlato!
The Grammy nominated vocalist from Los Angeles is said to have one of the most distinctive voices in jazz - a quality that has seen her feature on over 85 records in the past two decades. Over several of her own studio albums, she has developed a reputation for being musically adventurous - and left fans eagerly anticipating new material.
Their wait is over with Flor, a record which celebrates Gretchen’s deep passion for Brazilian music - mixing standards and sambas with original works that lyrically dive into her experience of motherhood over the past 6 years.
She has called the album “a blossoming, an opening, an offering, a return” - which feels very fitting given that ‘Flor’ means ‘flower’ in Portuguese.
Gretchen talks to Jamie about her early love of bossa nova, writing new material for Flor and how time away from releasing music has become a key part of her story.
