The Rhythm of the Dance

In what would have been Astor Piazzolla鈥檚 100th birthday year, the Britten Sinfonia celebrates the rhythm of the dance, from spicy tango to gypsy folk music.

The accordion - the quintessential sound of the Argentian tango 鈥� takes centre stage in Piazzolla鈥檚 Concerto, subtitled Aconcagua , after the highest mountain peak in South America. It鈥檚 a piece with all the sultry elegance and frenzied intensity of the Latin dance-hall. Tonight it鈥檚 played by the Polish virtuoso, Rafa艂 艁uc. The concert begins with a nod to Bach鈥檚 influence on Piazzolla in the form of a transcription for violin of his F minor keyboard concerto, played by Thomas Gould, and ends with Piazzolla鈥檚 most iconic pairing: the smoky Oblivion and the raw, racy Libertango.
