Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought

At the 93rdAcademy Awards this year the Original Music Score Award was won by composer Jon Batiste who wrote the music for the filmdzܱ.The animated film tells the story of a jazz pianist who has a near-death experience and ends up stuck in the confused maze of a disturbing afterlife.

This leads him to re-think his entire life and especially the effects of the many choices he made. The stark conclusion is that so far he has taken his life and his gifts for granted. In accepting the Oscar, Batiste celebrated the moment by giving thanks for what he termed the “12 notes”:He told the massive TV audience that God gives everyone 12 notes. It’s the same 12 notes that Duke Ellington had; that Bach, the Beatles and Nina Simone had. He emphasised that every gift is special;that every piece of beautiful music comes from the divine.

Powerful music continues to move the world;every song ever written and every song yet to be written - whether it’s “Sweet Caroline” or Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony -comes to us from the same 12 notes. “I’m thankful to God for those 12 notes,” Batiste said proudly. He then offered usa challenge. God not only gives us musical notes but gifts us with another unique selection of “notes” or talents. And with these we have to create the soundtrack to our lives. This “scale” of 12 notes includes attitudes like compassion, mercy, forgiveness, justice, empathy, loyalty, honesty and peace.

Our task is to lift the lives of others through the melody of our own life; it’s the same for the saint and the sinner, scientist and labourer, grandparent and child, corporate executive and forgotten homeless person - it’s our privilege to string together the theme tune to our lives with those 12 notes.

Personally, I think Mozart’s view that music is not in the notes but in the silence in between, describes my life perfectly. My attempt to be a better person is so disjointed that the music becomes discordant. However it’s never too late to strike the right note; to compose a new tune and “to help the world to sing in perfect harmony.”
