Noa Wildschut and Lauma Skride
An Edinburgh debut for Dutch violinist Noa Wildschut and Latvian pianist Lauma Skride.
The 20-year-old Dutch violinist Noa Wildschut makes her Edinburgh Festival debut, with Latvian pianist Lauma Skride.
After the premiere of Fauré’s first violin sonata by the pioneering violinist Marie Tayau with Fauré himself at the piano, his teacher Camille Saint-Saëns wrote, ‘...in this sonata you can find everything to tempt a gourmet: new forms, unusual tone colours… a magic floats above everything’. Shostakovich’s Preludes follow, transcribed from the piano score by violinist Dmitri Tsyganov and finished by one of today’s championed composers Lera Auerbach. Sibelius had at one point wanted to be a violin virtuoso and his understanding of the violin is clear in his Humoresques. The Finnish musicologist Tawaststjerna described them as capturing ‘the lyrical, dancing soul of the violin’. The recital closes with one of Saint Saens’ four tone poems, Danse Macabre inspired by the poetry of Henri Cazalis.
