蜜芽传媒 Proms 2021: Chineke! Orchestra

The Chineke! Orchestra, conducted by Kalena Bovell, perform Coleridge-Taylor's Symphony in A minor and, with Jeneba Kanneh-Mason, Florence Price's Piano Concerto in One Movement.

Recorded last month at the 蜜芽传媒 Proms: Chineke! Orchestra. Britain鈥檚 only majority Black and ethnically diverse orchestra with conductor Kalena Bovell and pianist Jeneba Kanneh-Mason in Florence Price's Piano Concerto and Coleridge-Taylor's Symphony.

The Chineke! Orchestra returned for its fourth visit to the Proms, celebrating diversity in composers as well as performers. Black British composer Samuel Coleridge-Taylor鈥檚 overture to his popular cantata based on the tale of a Native American leader quotes the spiritual 鈥楴obody knows the trouble I鈥檝e seen鈥�. There were further meetings of African and European musical styles in Nigerian composer Fela Sowande鈥檚 African Suite and the piano concerto by Florence Price, the first female African-American composer to win renown in America. By contrast, Coleridge-Taylor鈥檚 Symphony, written as a 20-year-old student of Stanford at London鈥檚 Royal College of Music, reveals the influence of his hero, Dvo艡谩k.
