Pause For Thought

A few months ago we celebrated the 100th birthday of my wife’s Grandad John. We gathered at his beloved allotment shed for photographs before a family knees up. All day John beamed with pride as he showed off his congratulations letter from Her Majesty the Queen. I sat with him to eat pork pie and listen to his favourite stories. Reminiscences about the precious friends he made - and lost - during the Second World War. And the eccentric customers he had during his 40 years working as a window cleaner.
Ìý
I also asked John if there was a secret to his long life. He laughed and whispered: home-grown runner beans and a tot of whisky before bed. Lately John’s health has deteriorated. He struggles to hear or see anything. Needs constant care and support at his little terraced house. I’ve marvelled at the way my in-laws have looked after him. So gladly, lovingly and faithfully. They admit that one of their biggest challenges has been in sharing the load. Being open to arranging outside support - for the sake of their own well being. I’ve found that some of us seem hardwired to give out help but can struggle to accept it back in. Sometimes because of an overwhelming sense of family duty or pride. And even in the face of physical or emotional burn out.
Ìý
The writerÌýMaya AngelouÌýonce said thatÌý“When we give cheerfully andÌýaccept gratefully, everyone is blessed.â€ÌýYet I think it’s often the accepting part that’s the hardest.ÌýAllowing others to help.ÌýI believe that God loves a cheerful giver - but I often forget that the Christian faith journey also includes being a willing and grateful receiver. For me, it’s vital to a healthy and balanced spirit.ÌýAn incredible woman from our parish has been a real example lately.ÌýÌýShe’s the most servant-hearted person I know.ÌýNever stops feeding, befriending and looking after people.ÌýÌýBut a recent cancer operation has meant that we’ve been able to rally round her for once.ÌýÌýAnd she’s learnt to warmly accept it - albeit reluctantly at first.ÌýÌýThe opportunity to unburden such a giving person has been a life-giving pleasure.ÌýAs for Grandad John, he’s gratefully receiving all the help he can get.ÌýÌýParticularly if it includes runner beans and whiskey.
