Monday - Puccini’s Il Tabarro at the ѿý Proms

Sir Mark Elder conducts Puccini’s one-act opera “Il Tabarro”. Plus the Proms Artist Choice, in which a Proms 2022 performer chooses a favourite work - and listener requests.

Fiona Talkington introduces another chance to hear Puccini’s one-act operatic masterpiece “Il Tabarro” at the ѿý Proms - a score that swirls and throbs with the energy of the River Seine.

Natalya Romaniw stars as the unhappily married Giorgetta, whose affair is the catalyst for murder. Two orchestral favourites set the watery scene: Respighi’s Fountains of Rome – by turns glistening in the sunlight and swathed in dawn mist – and the irrepressible musical antics of Dukas’s The Sorcerer’s Apprentice.

Dukas: The Sorcerer’s Apprentice
Respighi: Fountains of Rome

Our Listeners' Choice theme this week is "Piano Concertos", so we enjoy a favourite by Saint-Saens.

And there's a performance from the York Early Music Festival International Young Artists Competition every day this week, too. Today it's a concerto for 2 cellos by Benedetto Marcello, performed by the Italian ensemble Understories.
