Improving mental health for Bangladesh's garment workers

Nadia Ali hears about one ground-breaking project aiming to help support the mental health of Bangladesh's ready-made-garments industry workforce, 80% of whom are women.

Bangladesh has a population of 170 million, with one in five people estimated to experience poor mental health. More than 90% do not seek medical attention for mental health issues but 蜜芽传媒 Asian Network鈥檚 Nadia Ali hears about one ground-breaking project aimed to help support the 4 million-strong ready-made-garments industry workforce, 80% of whom are women.

Through a project supported by the British Asian Trust, Primark and SAJIDA Foundation, key workers in factories and mills are being trained as lay counsellors to provide support to their colleagues. Awareness-raising sessions help reduce stigma and cover important mental health issues and topics, helping workers to recognise mental health symptoms and seek support.
