The Planets: Holst鈥檚 colourful character portraits of our Solar System鈥檚 seven planets (excluding Earth) is by turns powerfully visceral and captivatingly luminous, opening with the war-like 鈥楳ars鈥� and concluding with 鈥楴eptune鈥�, whose alluring sounds float off into the ether. The 蜜芽传媒 National Orchestra of Wales and Jaime Mart铆n present the suite alongside Welsh composer Grace Williams鈥檚 Violin Concerto. Suppressed by Williams for many years, it is an intensely lyrical work whose bittersweet opening gives way to an ecstatic slow movement 鈥� based on a Welsh hymn tune 鈥� and a joyful finale. The concert opens with Dora Peja膷evi膰鈥檚 surging single gesture of an Overture, sumptuous textures married to bold, thrusting energy.
