6 Music's Artist In Residence Johnny Marr brings you his theory on the roots of indie music, including New Order, The Monochrome Set, Violent Femmes, and more!
A founding member of era-defining Manchester band, The Smiths, Johnny Marr is widely regarded as one of the greatest guitarists and songwriters of his generation, with a unique style that has shaped modern music. Johnny is also known for his widely acclaimed solo albums spanning the last decade including The Messenger, Playland, Call the Comet and Fever Dreams Pts 1-4. His instantly recognisable playing can also be heard on records by Electronic, Talking Heads, Modest Mouse, The Cribs, The Pretenders, Pet Shop Boys, Blondie and many more.
6 Music's Artist In Residence is a journey into the musical soul of an artist, based around a theme or mood. Each episode of Marr’s series sees him explore songs that have shaped specific periods of his life. Episodes include Influencers, where Marr explores the artists who informed his own playing, and North x North West, in which he recalls his time living in Portland, Oregon. Throughout the series, he’ll also take a deep dive into the inspiration behind various The Smiths riffs, demonstrate his deep love of Chic and share advice for anyone about how to play the guitar.
