Aldeburgh Festival 2024: Mahler's 4th Symphony

Ryan Wigglesworth conducts the ѿý Scottish Symphony Orchestra and Elizabeth Watts in Mahler's Symphony No 4, and they are joined by Daniel Pioro in Britten's Violin Concerto.

In Britten's Violin Concerto we hear all of that composer's hallmarks: recurring drama, daring virtuosity, and searing harmonies. With this performance the brilliant soloist Daniel Pioro joins the canon of leading violinists to have played Britten's iconic work at the Aldeburgh Festival.

Elizabeth Watts joins the orchestra in Mahler’s Fourth Symphony, his sunniest. The whole work arises from a simple child-like song, “The heavenly life”, that the composer wrote a decade before the symphony itself. It is a work of tremendous, almost celestial, beauty.

In similar fashion, Judith Weir began Forest “with nothing but the opening melody in mind. Nearly everything in the piece has grown from the tiny musical seeds encountered in the opening bars, and the composition has unfolded in a particularly natural and organic way. On reaching the conclusion I felt rather like a fairy-tale character pressing deeper and deeper into a mysterious prospect of trees”.
During the interval, Martin Handley will be joined by Sir Roger Wright, outgoing chief executive of Britten Pears Arts, to select some significant Aldeburgh moments.
