Northern Soul, one of the most avidly collected and beloved musical subcultures, emerged in the North of England in the early-70s. It evolved out of the mod scene, embracing high tempo underground American soul music with Black Panthers-style iconography alongside a uniquely captivating dance style. It began to find its way to Belfast in the late 70s, establishing itself in 1984. On this week’s show, Stephen talks to three stalwarts of the Belfast scene - Norman Crothers, Pete Brady and Deborah Armstrong. He also catches up with DJ, promoter and dancer Levanna McLean who is at the forefront of a revival of Northern Soul in Bristol. Expect outstanding Northern Soul music throughout.
