Uisge/Water
As the world warms, oceans are changing, with far-reaching consequences for the life they contain and the people that rely upon them.
Tha cuantan na cruinne cudromach dha ar beatha. Tha iad a’ còmhdach seachdad a-mach as a’ cheud den phlanaid againn, a’ toirt air falbh meudan mòr de charboin agus teas bhon à ile, agus tha iad a’ a’ toirt dhuinn tòrr dhen bhiadh againn. Ach fhad ’s a tha an saoghal a’ teasachadh, tha cuantan ag atharrachadh, agus tha a h-uile nì a tha seo a’ toirt buaidh air na tha beò agus a tha an urra riutha.
A’ siubhal bho na h-uisgeachan as fhuara den Antartaig chun an fheadhainn a tha a’ clà radh ìrean-teòthachd ùr à rd ann an Astrà ilia, tha na sgiobaidhean seo a’ taisbeanadh mar a tha cuid de ghnèithean air am putadh gu an crìochan, fhad ’s a tha feadhainn eile ag atharrachadh, a’ tabhainn adhbhar dòchais do fhallainneachd nan cuantan a tha a’ stòradh carboin.
Tha bith-eòlaichean mara, luchd-saidheans atharrachadh na gnà th-shìde, luchd-eòlais tùsanach, luchd-glèidhteachais agus luchd-dealbhachaidh bhailtean a’ sealltainn dhuinn mar a tha saidheans nà dar agus traidisean gar ullachadh airson à m ri teachd a tha ag atharrachadh ag astar, agus gu bheil feum air farsaingeachd eòlais an uair a thathas a’ feuchainn ri atharrachadh na gnà th-shìde a thuigsinn agus a’ lùghdachadh.
Earth’s oceans are crucial for life. They cover 70% of our planet, remove vast amounts of carbon and heat from the atmosphere, and provide much of our food. But as the world warms, oceans are changing, with far-reaching consequences for the life they contain and the people that rely upon them.
Journeying from the coldest waters of Antarctica to new record temperature highs in Australia, we reveal how some species are being pushed to their limits, while others are adapting, offering hope to the health of our carbon-storing oceans.
Marine biologists, climate scientists, indigenous knowledge holders, conservationists and city planners show us how science, nature and tradition can help prepare for a fast-changing future, and that a diversity of knowledge is needed when understanding and mitigating climate change.
