Alina Ibragimova joins the London Philharmonic Orchestra for Prokofiev's first violin concerto; Hannu Lintu conducts the orchestra in Orion, composed by his compatriot Kaija Saariaho, and Nielsen's shattering Fifth symphony.

Carl Neilsen was a composer who had seen the devastation caused by war, and his shattering Fifth Symphony summed up his own views about music: "Music is life and like it, inextinguishable." This extraordinary, two-movement work is conducted by the dynamic Finn Hannu Lintu, who also brings the sound-world of his compatriot Kaija Saariaho to the stage of the Royal Festival Hall. Orion paints a vivid picture of both the Giant Hunter whom Zeus places amongst the stars as a constellation, as well as depicting the cold soundworld of a Finnish landscape. And Alina Ibragimova joins the orchestra to give an extraordinary performance of Prokofiev's great First Violin Concerto; criticised at its first performance for being too conservative, Alina demonstrates a piece full of fairy tale-magic which dances and crackles with energy.
