Donovan Haffner’s 4/4
This week rising UK alto saxophonist Donovan Haffner shares four albums that have resonated with him.
‘Round Midnight is presented by award-winning saxophonist Soweto Kinch. This weekday late-night show celebrates the thriving UK jazz scene and spotlights the best new music alongside incredible acts from past decades.
This week Soweto is joined by one of the exciting artists in UK's jazz next generation cohort, alto saxophonist Donovan Haffner. An alumnus and continuing Tomorrow’s Warriors collaborator, Donovan has worked with Moses Boyd, Balimaya Project and Nu Civilisation Orchestra, and is now stepping out as a one-to-watch bandleader. He released his debut album Alleviate this spring, featuring guitarist Francisco Garcia De-Paredes, pianist Jay Verma, double bassist, Harry Pearce, and drummer Harry Ling.
From Monday to Thursday, Donovan will be guiding us round his record collection, sharing some of the albums that have inspired him, and that he has on heavy rotation. Tonight, his first selection is an album by a UK jazz band widely celebrated for their rhythmic daring.
Plus, there’s music from Eric Lau, Mamiko Kitaura, and Jo Levano and Trio Tapestry.
