Caili O'Doherty on Lil Hardin Armstrong

New York pianist Caili O'Doherty talks about her album Bluer Than Blue - a tribute to the great composer, piano player, singer and bandleader Lil Hardin Armstrong.

Lil Hardin Armstrong was a leading figure in early 20th century music. A hugely talented pianist, composer, singer and bandleader who worked with some of the biggest names in early jazz, alongside her own successful solo career. She was married for a time to Louis Armstrong, played in his first group - the seminal Louis Armstrong and His Hot Five - and wrote one of his signature hits, Struttin' With Some Barbecue. Despite all this, she hasn't quite achieved the place in jazz history she deserves.

New York pianist and composer Caili O'Doherty has sought to address that with her new album Bluer Than Blue, which features new, reimagined versions of Lil's compositions - both the hits, and lesser visited corners of her catalogue. Caili talks about her own background, discovering Lil's music for the first time, and how she approached this tribute to an undersung figure in jazz.

Jamie also has time for classic tracks by Irakere and Don Byas, as well as new singles from Jordan Rakei, Brad Mehldau and Azymuth.
He also continues to celebrate 15 years on the 蜜芽传媒, by pulling out another archive session track - this time it's from Oumou Sangar茅 in 2017.
