Cavalleria rusticana and Pagliacci

A double-bill of Mascagni's Cavalleria rusticana and Leoncavallo's Pagliacci from Bavarian State Opera, recorded last month in Munich.

A double-bill of Mascagni's Cavalleria rusticana and Leoncavallo's Pagliacci from Bavarian State Opera, recorded last month in Munich.

Cavalleria rusticana tells the story of Turiddu, a soldier who, after learning his love Lola has married another while he was away, seduced Santuzza in order to spite his ex-fiancée. But Lola and Turiddu then restart their own affair, pushing Lola’s husband Alfio to take violent retribution.

In Pagliacci we're with a travelling theatre troupe including the clown Canio, his wife Nedda and her lover Silvio. Canio suspects Nedda of carrying on an affair, and those suspicions lead to violence during the performance of a comedy - which closely mirrors the tangled affairs of its cast members' lives...
