Mendelssohn's epic symphony 'Lobgesang' from Vienna makes up part of this afternoon's offering alongside concert recordings from Frankfurt, London, Manchester and Glasgow. Introduced by Elizabeth Alker.
Mendelssohn's 'Hymn of Praise', sometimes numbered as his Second Symphony, is the most ambitious of his set lasting nearly twice as long as any of his other symphonies. It was the first symphony to feature a chorus after Beethoven's Ninth. In a week that foregrounds concert recordings of the Mendelssohn symphonies from great orchestras across Europe, Elizabeth turns her focus on Vienna and the Vienna Philharmonic. Also in today's programme, Bartok from Frankfurt with one of the most acclaimed musicians of our time, violist Tabea Zimmermann; and more highlights from a chamber series given at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland by the Maxwell Quartet and pianist Daniel Ciobaru.
Also, a specially commissioned tribute the Queen Elizabeth II from Thea Musgrave as part of the Radio 3 series '25 for 25'.
