Saving St Elvan's
Charting the revival of a historic Welsh church in Aberdare that has been reborn as a vibrant hub of faith, art and community through creativity and collective spirit.
Nestled in the Cynon Valley of South Wales, in the heart of the town of Aberdare, stands the majestic St Elvan’s Church, a Grade II listed Anglican church affectionately known as the 'Cathedral of the Valleys'. Since its foundation in 1852, St Elvan’s has stood as a spiritual, architectural and cultural landmark.
However, by 2018, this once-glorious symbol of Welsh heritage faced imminent closure. The fabric of the building had deteriorated, the main boiler had failed, and there were mounting financial challenges.
This documentary tells the powerful story of how this iconic church was not only saved from dereliction but reborn as a vibrant hub of worship, culture and community life. Led by the tireless efforts of Father Robert Davies, and supported by a passionate team of staff, volunteers and funding bodies, the film captures the remarkable transformation of the church.
