Agents of Change

Exploring eras of great change for both Ireland and hurling. Newspapers give way to radio, and the 1960s heralds the arrival of television.

We meet some of the superstars of hurling who left an indelible mark on the sport, including Limerick's Mick Mackey, Wexdford's Nicky Rackard, and the legend that was Christy Ring. These were the men that fans travelled cross-country to see.

Charting Cork’s four-in-a-row victory, through to Wexford’s toppling of the blue bloods in the 1950s, and on to the indomitable Tipperary backline in the 1960s, this episode explores eras of great change, and not just for hurling but for the island as a whole. Newspapers gave way to radio, with television broadcasting following in the 1960s.

Hurling had a new medium and new audiences, but the two pillars of an Irish Sunday – church and the match – were no longer the only distractions, and Ireland of the late 1960s was now beginning to look very different.
