Metallica - Metallica
The masters of metal change direction with The Black Album, but is it the beginning of the end for Metallica?
As Spinal Tap once said, it could be "None more black."
Metallica had dominated the 80s metal scene like a colossus, their complex and labyrinthine thrash breaking new ground in rock music. But as the 90s dawned, the band were in a state of flux, still coming to terms with the tragic death of bass player Cliff Burton, and trying to escape the fact that they'd hit a creative brick wall.
The album that eventually emerged, known as The Black Album transformed everything, becoming the album that would define Metallica forever. But all these years later, did they sell out? Has it been diminishing returns ever since?
In Long Player, Steven Rainey explores the road that Metallica took to conquer the mainstream.
