Difficult Decisions

Episode 11 of 12

A simple slip on a rocky beach turns into a race against the tide; a birthday outing in the mountains takes an unexpected turn; and things get complicated in a father and son rescue.

Documentary series following the dedicated rescue teams based in the stunning but extreme landscape of Eryri, North Wales. Eryri’s miles of breathtaking coastline are a place for people to relax and unwind. But if things go wrong, rescuing someone can become a race against the tide. In this episode, when a walker slips on rocks, fracturing her wrist, she’s not only in extreme pain - she’s at risk of being completely cut off by the incoming tide. With no time to lose, Coastguard Rescue teams must work together with the Search & Rescue helicopter to winch her to safety.

Next, it’s a hot summer’s day on one of southern Eryri’s most popular spots, Cader Idris. A walker on a birthday outing with some friends suddenly collapses. He’s suffered a head injury, so Mountain Rescue volunteers must battle the heat and a very steep uphill route to reach him as quickly as possible. They then face a very challenging 2km stretcher-carry to get him back down the mountain. Some rescues might seem straightforward, but in reality they turn out to be anything but. When a 72-year-old father and his son find themselves lost in the dark after a long day out in the mountains, team leader Kim hopes he can guide them down in the right direction, over the phone. But with a storm setting in, and the pair still lost, he decides to send two small teams out, along different routes, to try to find them. Then, when one of the party takes a tumble and cracks a rib, what looked like a simple rescue suddenly becomes a lot more complicated.
