The Smiths - Meat is Murder

Humour and horror combine as The Smiths unleash their first masterpiece, 1985's Meat is Murder.

Whisper it...The Smiths' debut album is a bit flat...

Not the era-defining masterpiece Morrissey had envisaged, their 1984 album had been a difficult birth, with a handful of good songs, marred (no pun intended...) by drab production.

Indeed, for many fans, the first real taste of the band's greatness came with Hatful of Hollow, a compilation of ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ radio sessions and singles, which showcased just how dynamic the band was becoming.

But nothing prepares you for Meat is Murder, a record that fuses humour and horror to become the band's first masterpiece, and one of the most iconic albums of the decade.

With the band stretching out and proving their muscle, Morrissey rises to the challenge, showcasing his sharpest set of lyrics yet, witty vignettes of petty thuggery, unrequited love, corporal punishment, and a plea for vegetarianism that still shocks to this day.

Using archive, classic tracks and influences, Steven Rainey explores the story behind The Smiths' second album.
