Leonard in Newtownards has come up with an answer "It originated from an American newspaper magnet James Gordon Bennett. It's said as another form of swearing without being offensive."
"I grew up in London and the phrase Gordon Bennett was used regularly. Many people used it to avoid swearing! The origin of the name was said to refer to a newspaper owner and publisher who was renowned for outlandish behaviour. Hence the phrase was said when someone did something outlandish" texts Eddie.
Sean usually says it when he hits his thumb with a hammer.
"What was the name of the barmaid in Hearbeat?" is Barney Sloan's question of the day.
