Enya - Watermark
Enya takes listeners to another state of mind with her 1988 album Watermark, a classic new age record.
New Age music was an underground phenomenon in the 1970s, emerging out of the post-psychedelic world, with musicians creating otherworldly soundscapes, and music to meditate to.
And in 1988, Enya became the breakout star of the New Age musical movement, whether she wanted to be or not. She'd always deny being affiliated with this particular type of music, but as far as the public were concerned, Watermark was the gateway to another world, conjured perfectly by the lush soundscapes and haunting quality of her voice.
In this episode of Long Player, Steven Rainey uses music and archive to put Watermark in context with the New Age movement, and tries to understand its enduring appeal.
