Alexander McCall Smith on his latest novels, and writer and performer Henry Naylor on new play Monstering the Rocketman

Alexander McCall Smith talks about his two new novels, Bertie's Theory of Ice Cream and In the Time of Five Pumpkins.

One of the world’s most prolific and best-loved contemporary novelists Sir Alexander McCall Smith was previously a professor of medical law until he became a household name with the runaway success of The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency series, set in Botswana. Today, Len speaks to Sandy about the latest in that series, In the Time of Five Pumpkins, which is out on 1 September - and also about the 18th book in his phenomenally popular 44 Scotland Street series, Bertie’s Theory of Ice Cream, which has just been published.

And writer, performer, producer and director Henry Naylor is also with Len. He’s written for many award-winning comedy shows, including Smith & Jones, The Lenny Henry Show, Dead Ringers and Alistair McGowan's Big Impression. He was a lead writer on Spitting Image, and together with his double-act partner Andy Parsons, he starred in nine series of Parsons & Naylor's Pull-Out Sections on ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ Radio 2. He’s won four Fringe First awards and is here again at the Edinburgh festival Fringe with a new show, Monstering the Rocketman, which is based on the true story of Britain’s biggest-ever libel case, when singer Elton John successfully sued The Sun, the bestselling paper of the day.
