Follow the Dogs
Warren spends time meticulously reconstructing his post-op hallucination in miniature.
This part-animated documentary is an uplifting, hopeful film that explores an older person’s relationship with healthcare and creativity through the lens of cancer patient Warren.
After major surgery during lockdown, Warren experiences an intense hallucination. His surroundings morph and change, taking him into a different world entirely. This other world, revealing a deep-rooted capacity for imagination in Warren, reflects how he truly feels about his life-changing diagnosis.
Returning home from hospital during the Covid-19 pandemic, Warren finds himself in isolation. He spends this time meticulously reconstructing his hallucination in miniature, using improvised and found materials. The result is a lovingly handcrafted rendition of a pivotal moment in his life. It’s a beautiful testament to the tenacity of the countless vulnerable people thrown into difficult situations caused by the pandemic, and of the effectiveness of art as healing.
The film revolves around Warren’s experience of surgery and recovery, using live action to capture his conversation and the magic inventiveness of his home and creative endeavours. Warren’s homemade sculptures and models are central to the conversation, as well as being the starting point for the animated sequences which have retained a hand-crafted aesthetic while delivering Warren’s account into a fully rendered, beautifully cinematic world.
